View Full Version : Sound (don't mean to be annoying)

Hi everyone,

Sorry to be annoying with the multiple posts. I'm wondering if you can help me out a bit here. I'm running Mandrake 10 with the 2.6 kernel and have a nVidia nforce2 soundboard on my mobo. I usually use the i81x0 driver for this.

Back in Mandrake 9.2 and the 2.4 kernel, I would run ATITD using the artsdsp ./elaunch command. However, now when I do this, my system begins to go nuts. The client crawls and the sound is spotty. Also, ATITD takes over ALL the sound on my box. I can't hear music or anything unless I shut down the client.

How can I free up the sound server when playing ATITD?

Once again, if I use artsdsp, the client slows to a crawl.

Thanks.

What DE are you in?

If KDE fiddle with arts settings (buffer, run server with realtime priority (disable)).

If not in KDE, these features are configurable from the config file, or from the artsd command line.

Best of luck, (one of my systems still refuses to allow sound support (cpu overload)).

Well... 2.6 broke lots of things... ArTSd with ALSA being one of them... make SURE you have OSS sound emulation enabled. As for anything else... Sound is flakey as hell with 2.6.. With EVERYTHING that I have used. Even XMMS is less than stellar.

Bah, and everyone is raving about the wonders of 2.6.

I'd stick with 2.4 if I could, but I've already gone all the way.

Removing real-time priority seems to help. Thanks Guidos.

I'll continue fiddling. Thanks Pluribus.

Thanks for the info Pluribus.

I've known about the APIC problem and Nvidia for awhile now. Always boot with noapic. :D But those links really helped.

I'm running threaded OSS now in KDE 3.2 with the sound_i81x0 driver and it works very well.

The client runs smoothly now with artsdsp so my sound system is free.

Thanks again, I am in your debt
