To start with, my machine is an Athlon 1700+ with 384MB of ram running Fedora Core 2. I'd been using a GeForce 2 MX video card, and was getting about 3FPS. A few weeks ago I decided to get a new video card and new monitor (the old was getting fuzzy and was very dark, even outside ATITD), so I got a GeForce FX 5900 and an overstocked Dell monitor that can run at 1600x1200. Once I'd gotten them installed and upgraded to the latest nVidia driver I was getting 30-50 fps, which made me very happy.
Unfortunately, I haven't stayed happy. It turns out that the monitor was slightly damaged in shipping (a frequent complaint about that model apparently), so I put my old monitor back on while another was being shipped out to me. As soon as I did this, my frame rate dropped back down to 3fps. Even now that I've got my replacement monitor plugged in the game only gets three fps at most. I really don't want to blame it on a monitor, but none of the software has changed any, so I really don't know what else to think. Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
I played the game at 3fps for quite a while last telling with no complaints, but now that I've used it at 30+ fps for a week or so, I find it very dissatisfying. Trees are ugly again too.
